    Without the multipole expansion one will have to compute the nucleus-electron interaction term, which quickly becomes difficult for an intricate shape of the nucleus.

    The energy hierarchy makes PT a very convenient aproximation.
    1 Depending on the complexity of the interactions one can truncate the expansion up to any order.
    2 For a simple interaction where the corrections are negligible.
    3 Yes it is possible.
