    Without the multiple expansion the energy scale of the electron kinetic energy and electron-electron interaction would be similar to the electron-nuclear interaction, as such, all these term would have to be treated at the same level of perturbation theory, i.e., we couldn’t solve for the electron energy levels independently. Also, the expression for the full electron-nucleus interaction could be very complicated which would make the problem even more unfeasible.
