The applied field are used to orient the atomic magnetic moment. If the hyperfine field is positive, then the NMR/ON spectrum would show a shift of the spectral peak to higher magnetic field values. On the other hand, if the hyperfine field is negative, the peak would shift to lower magnetic field values.
