If alpha is larger than 0, the angle should be 0 degrees, so the dumb-bell should be parallel to the z-axis.
If alpha is smaller than 0, the angle should be 90 degrees, so the dumb-bell should be in the xy-plane.
If alpha is 0, the energy is independent of the orientation of the dumb-bell.
