Dumb bell problem

If alpha > 0, the dumb bell has to be aligned with the z-axis. For alpha = 0 all possible orientations are lowest energy orientations. For alpha < 0, the lowest energy is obtained for theta = 90°, thus the dumb bell lies in the xy-plane.
