    An EFG that is negative along the z-axis is needed
    Other than this, I believe the only difference is that quantum states have a limited number of specific possible values. I suppose if a nucleus has a very large spin number, there are more possible orientations, which would look more and more like the continuous function that describes the energy levels of orientations of the toy model.
