J = L+S, and so if L and S are parallel, they can be aligned to get J = 2 from l=s= +/- 1 or anti-aligned to get J = 0 from l = -s = +/- 1. If they are perpendicular we have that one of them is either +/- 1 and the other 0, resulting in J = 1.
