    (1) The hyperfine interaction tells us that the lowest energy state is m=+1 and this will correspond to a nucleus with a spin orientation pointing in the positive z-direction. The m=0 state will give an orientation in the z=0 plane and a m=-1 will give a nuclear spin in the negative z-direction.

    (2) At low temperatures, we are dealing with low energy states I think. So this means that most nuclei will be in the m=+1 state and thus have a spin pointing in the positive z-direction. This will lead to a polarized orientation of the ensemble (like a pear).
