    For J = 0, the orbital angular momentum L and the spin angular mommentum S point in opposite directions, cancelling each other out, resulting in the lowest energy.
    For J = 1, L and S are perpundicular to each other, giving some contribution to the energy.
    For J = 2, L and S point in the same direction, adding each other’s effects up to the highest energy.
