I am somewhat embarrassed to submit an answer, as this was my first time hearing about electric or magnetic multipole moments at all. I think I am beginning to understand. The only example I can think of is on the molecular level, rather than the atomic level, with polar molecules. Water being a dipolar molecule. I think I remember that Ammonia is multipolar? I would have to look that up to make sure.
