    J is the vector sum of L and S, so J = L+S, …, |L-S|
    with L = ml = -1,0,1 and S = ms = -1,0,1
    parallel and pointing in opposite directions: J = 0
    perpendicular to each other: J = 1
    parallel and pointing in the same directions: J = 2
