In an intuitive picture one can think that the L magnetic moment generates a magnetic field that is felt by the S magnetic moment. S will tend to align it self with the field, which has opposite direction to L, to minimize the energy, therefore, the J=0 corresponds to L and S parallel and pointing in opposite directions, the J=1 corresponds to L and S perpendicular and J=2 corresponds to L and S parallel.
