alpha > 0 (small rings far apart): a dumb-bell along the z-axis is stable
alpha < 0 (big rings close together): a dumb-bell is the x-y plane is stable
alpha = 0 (distance between rings = sqrt(2)*radius rings): potential energy is zero everywhere there is no stable position
